Smart Pump Simulation Training for Nurses

Smart Pump Application

In a strategic partnership between CSE Software Inc. and OSF Healthcare at the Jump Trading Simulation & Education Center, Peoria, Ill., CSE developed a simulation for an infusion pump device. The correct use of infusion pump devices is critical to patient care and safety. Smart Pumps work independently and together to deliver lifesaving blood, medications and other fluids. The computerized unit provides the foundation to build and customize infusion for patients. Pump units can then be added to the foundation unit to deliver fluids based on individual patient needs. Delivery methods could be via intravenous, intra-arterial, subcutaneous, epidural, enteral or irrigation of fluid spaces.

Using interactive tablet training developed by CSE Software, nursing professionals will learn the proper operation of the Smart Pump and supporting software program used for patient safety. The actual pump has a built-in computer and it is constantly collecting and monitoring data. The system helps improve patient safety and reinforces best practices. Through the simulation of this device, training on the Smart Pump can be delivered consistently and efficiently to personnel. The app allows training to take place in a patient care environment, and in the presence of a preceptor. In addition, processes and procedures can be covered to help personnel get a full understanding of the device; or it can even be used for patient education.

“This is training that can happen on a tablet, right next to a patient care environment, and in the presence of a preceptor. We can document that people are achieving competency in the clinical space at the bedside.”

Dr. John Vozenilek, MD, FACEP Chief Medical Officer Jump trading Simulation & Education Center

To ensure that all users have properly learned the procedures and key critical safety steps that are embedded to prevent medical errors, the evidence-based content can document that personnel are achieving competency in the clinical space. Ultimately, Smart Pump simulation training at Jump will lead to better patient care. The ability to train with realistic devices and environments ensures that medical professionals learn the same techniques as they will use in a real-world medical situation.
